Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Central Energy Plant

This project included the new construction of a 15,500 square foot, 2-story Central Plant, and 1-story Oxygen Tank Farm to service the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL. The project provides associated power, chilled water, steam, natural gas, potable water, and medical gases to the hospital. Full 3-D modeling was utilized to coordinate the routing of all the new underground piping with the existing piping. Highlights of the project include:

• Two Trane centrifugal water chillers, with a capacity of 900 tons each, and 2 Marley cooling towers, each with a 5,400 gpm flow rate was set, piped, and commissioned to provide the chilled water service to the building. The medium pressure steam is created with two Cleaver Brooks firetube boilers with bi-fuel capabilities.
• The bi-fuel system is achieved with four, 12,000 gallon underground diesel fuel tanks and dedicated natural gas. The boilers and generators both utilize this bi-fuel system during their operations.
• Russ Electric switchgear and automatic transfer switches were installed to provide normal, life safety, equipment, and critical power.
• FPL provided 13.2 KW service from primary and secondary feeds, stepped down in the FPL vault to 480 V and 4000 amps, then brought into the normal side switchgear. Within the automatic transfer switches is where the emergency switchgear and normal switchgear were transferred back and forth.
• Two 15,000 kW Pantropic ensure that emergency power in the event of an FPL power loss from both feeds is available at all times.
